Cricket Coach: 'Ad'ded

The Pakistan Cricket board had advertised for a new coach on their website...an Indian daily invited applications for a new cricket coach and had asked a few reputed agencies to come up with a good press ad. Here's two of Mumbai mirror's shortlist.

-> Agency : LOWE ; Team: Samrat Dasgupta, Jaywant Dhabolkar
"No comments "- BCCI is looking for yet another coach to mouth these magic words.

Agency: J WALTER THOMPSON
Team: Josy Paul, Steven Mathias, Priya Pardiwalla.

"BCCI is looking for a coach with attached toilet"

At BCCI we are fed up of hiring coaches who let us down or fight with the captain...... The coach will have a permanent sticker at the door saying

It is mystical.

Celebrating 60 years : Thai Manne Vanakkam

June 26th 1997

The pre-production crew leaves Mumbai and lands at Bhuj, Gujarat to setup for the filming. Permissions from Panchayats-Government officials- local authorities, Organizing local crowd for the shoot, working out art department's logistics to setup the big flag, accommodation for a crew of more than 75 people, travel plans for Raju master's dancers from Madras... and more production headaches..

BHUJ

The filming begins on July 1st. With a crowd of 50 people waving in front of the camera.. Well, where are we heading... Aren't they supposed to wave their hands left to right, right to left on 'action'? why aren't people co-operating? Too many questions.. End of Day1.. not a single decent shot canned. All production heads and assistant directors get a big round of 'firing' from the bosses on 'shoot' day 1 for their incompetence.

Filming Day 2 : Better than Day 1. Cinematographer Kevin's assistant from UK was a big foodie and that's probably why he had to leave the shoot even before it started. He develops a bad stomach, illness follows after tasting "lovely spicy indian food".Off he leaves, back to UK.

Filming Day 3: Bhuj is hot, but we gotta film.. we gotta film! no way out... there is no place for crew members who complain about working under the hot sun.

After a few days, the crew is off to Jaisalmer from Bhuj for their marathon bus ride, for 20 long hours.. Tired, the crew lands at Jaisalmer. Yummy Gujarati food at the hotel. What a relief!

JAISALMER

The directors decide to use the lovely desert as the backdrop for most of the shots. So a sunrise-sunset shoot is planned on all days. Unfortunately (for the crew) the sun rises at an unearthly 5 am and sets as late as 7.30pm.. So another couple of sleepless days.

The 'star' arrives on Day 2.. Ah!He's quite conscious in front of the camera... but at ease, later, after a couple of takes.

Raju Sundaram's dancers brave the scorching heat at 40 + degrees and dance..barefoot on the desert.

.

A serpentine queue of local villagers on the desert dunes waiting to be filmed. "That last guy needs to be shifted back slightly" says the director sitting in front of the monitor. "Which last guy?" the assistant director(a.d) asks. "The one on top of the dune.." Arrgh! That's a kilometer away. There she runs.. the poor a.d with her walkie talkie... on the desert ."Quick! We need to complete filming as the sun sets in the background.." (And that's a few minutes away). The A.D runs and runs.. finally the 'last guy' is shifted. A well-filmed shot with a lady holding the Indian flag in front and a long queue of people behind her.

LADAKH

The enthusiastic crew reaches Leh, Ladakh and wants to start filming without any delay. But at Leh, one needs to get acclimatized to the weather for at least 48 hours - i.e rest completely, before heading out.The crew does not want to waste a single minute because the equipment and crew were hired and paid on a per day basis - filming / non-filming immaterial. The crew goes out filming faces, flags, landscapes etc. But at the end of the first day's filming, a few of them end up with bleeding noses..altitude I guess. The crew did not want to stop, the rest of them resume filming and complete the schedule.

COCHIN
The final schedule of filming. Kathakali dancers, kids on the beach, elephants, Kerala in monsoons... a no-hassle filming but for the (slightly?) angry elephants.

July 21st 1997

A tired crew is back in Mumbai . Directors head to UK for post production... tele cine, off-line editing, on line editing, sound.....

August 9th 1997: One of the crew members [CM] of the above shoot at a hotel in Delhi .. tired after a full day filming for another project.. channel surfing at midnight, sound muted.. E-T-C Channel it says..CM sees visuals of people carrying the national flag, on a camel..."Doesn't it look familiar?" CM thinks. Reaches out to the remote to unmute... A familiar humming continues.. "Hey... its our video.. the video that I worked on.. the video that I slogged for.. for months!!.. Hurrah!!" CM is all excited.. Calls up a fellow colleagues at that unearthly hour .."Saw our video on air!!" CM screams. They are equally excited.. India's biggest music video and easily the best till date is premiered. Even after 10 years, the crew member remembers every minute of filming, every frame filmed, the secret trips [on non-shoot days] to the Jaisalmer market to buy kurtas and chappals, the big showdown with a colleague in front of a 100+ crew, communicating with a pucca Gujju crowd in broken Hindi, a scary Pak border filming at Gujarat, Rajasthani food, the crew caterers from Madras outdoor unit, caterer 'Ponnusaami', his oorugai, podi , Rasiklal paakku, Raju Master and assistants, A R Rahman, the Big National Flag, the last day of filming with a 'hip hip hurrah!'... What an experience! Vande Mataram! Happy Independence Day!

The author of this blog wishes to thank the crew member for the inputs.
PS: Is the tamizh version 'Thaai Manne Vanakkam' available online? If yes, please post the URL in the comments section. Thank you.

The Blue Umbrella- Review

Children's films made in India are a treat to watch. But there are not many films produced for children. The CFSI - Children's Film Society of India is quite inactive and we only get to see chairperson Nafisa Ali occasionally on NDTV, CNN-IBN etc on debates with Barkha Dutt, Vikram Chandra and the likes and more often on Page 3 parties.

THE BLUE UMBRELLA

The Blue Umbrella, directed by Vishal Bharadwaj and produced by UTV was released today. This film bagged the National Award for the best children's film of 2005, in the 53rd National Awards. Vishal Bharadwaj's debut film as a director was Makdee, released four years ago, a story about a witch and a village girl. I enjoyed watching Makdee and so I decided to watch Blue Umbrella, first day first show. I was not disappointed.

STORY

This film is a screen adaptation of a novel by Ruskin Bond. Biniya is a little girl who lives with wrestler cum milk vendor brother, and her old mother in a village in Himachal Pradesh. A happy and sweet looking child, Biniya is fascinated by a Blue Umbrella that a set of Japanese tourists leave behind. Unfortunately the tourists come back to take it but are prepared to exchange the umbrella for Biniya's bear-nail lucky charm locket. She agrees and now is the proud owner of a beautiful blue umbrella.Much to the envy of the village, Nandan Khatri, the shop owner in particular, Biniya carries the umbrella wherever she goes, plays, dances and even carries it while she takes her cows for grazing. Nandan, the scheming shop owner has an obsession for knick knacks especially those owned by kids, like for instance even a small binocular. This clever old guy manages to take possession of all these knick knacks in exchange for goodies viz. biscoots, chocolates that he gives the kids on debt.

Biniya and her umbrella is the talk of the town and naturally Nandan wants to possess one too. He goes to the local Umbrella shop who tells him that these kind of umbrellas are priced Rs.2500/= and one can get them ordered from Delhi but only if Nandan promises to pay the money in advance. A dejected Nandan comes and pleads with Biniya to exchange her blue umbrella for the goodies he promises. Biniya does not agree. Nandan even gives her money. Biniya refuses to part with her umbrella.

And the one day.... Biniya loses her umbrella. She panics..broods, refuses to eat for days. Who stole her umbrella? Is it Nandan or his man friday or the rolly-polly Lilly aunty who too has an eye on the umbrella or any of those neighbours around her with an envious look everytime Biniya went around town dancing with the umbrella? No clue.

Nandan receives a huge parcel one day and as he opens it we see a bright Red umbrella similar to what Biniya had, in it. Nandan is now seen dancing with it, posing for tourists' photograph with his Red umbrella, getting himself shaved under the Umbrella's shade.. ha! Nandan is a happy man but Biniya is still unhappy.

As the rest of the story unfolds, does Biniya actually gets the joy of her life - The Blue Umbrella back? Yes, she does get her umbrella back... The blue umbrella? hmmm..I do not want to give away the suspense

CASTING

The strength of the film is in its casting. Shreya Sharma as the little girl is apt in her role as a village girl from Himachal. Pink cheeks, two plaits, eyes with kajal, salwar kameez clad and perfect expression. She is bang on. Watch out for her expression in the scene where she meets Nandan, for the last time. For this scene, in particular,I will not use words like "Fantastic" or "Superb", Nice is the word.. really nice. No over acting.Just apt. Vishal Bharadwaj had auditioned more than 500 kids before he finalised Shreya for this role. Shreya hails from Himachal Pradesh and this has definitely added to this film set entirely in Himachal Pradesh.

Pankaj Kapur plays Nandan Khatri. His face fits the role of a greedy old villager perfectly. But I found it uncomfortable looking at him, caricatured. His character is not a caricature, actually. He is superb in the (pre) climax scene.May be one is used to seeing him as a serious villian in films like Roja, Maqbool etc, it was difficult to digest the modulated caricatured voice. It was way too uncomfortable. I wish the director had made him speak in his original voice and not made it artificially squeaky for accent's sake.

Apart from these two, the brother, Lilly aunty, the mother, friends of Biniya, the police man etc, many of them first timers are well cast.

TECHNICAL

This is probably a very good film for the tourism board of Himachal Pradesh. Himachal in summer, winter and other seasons - well captured by cinematographer Sachin Krishn. You go 'wow' everytime there is a crane shot or a long shot of the picturisque village. The scenes filmed in the rain are a treat for the eyes. Shreya +Blue Umbrella shot in twilight.. beautiful!

Aarif Sheikh is the editor. The film tends to slow down a bit in the middle but seamless editing, I must add.

The little village in Himachal, dressed up art director Sameer Chandra is pleasing. The Blue Umbrella designed by Sa Paper & Handicrafts in Thailand, looks really good, you want to own one.

Vishal Bharadwaj is also the music director of the film. Two of the three songs are melodious.

Kudos to Vishal Bharadwaj for giving us a warm and feel good film.Awaiting his next Children's film.

FINAL WORD

Overall the look of the film is fresh and I wish more producers come up to produce children's films for India, based in India .The last children's film I saw was Makdee which was more than 4 years ago. I do not categorize films like Anjali as children's films because of the masala element added for commercial reasons...not even Mazhalai pattalam which I enjoy whenever I watch it on VijayTV even now - which seems to be playing the film atleast once a week.

Having said that, I wonder how many kids of today will enjoy The Blue Umbrella. With films like Spiderman, Harry Potter, Shrek etc these days, I doubt if kids will enjoy a film which does not boast of any special effects but still excels in a story with a moral, well narrated, well filmed.

The Blue Umbrella which runs for approximately 100 minutes, is a Hindi film with a very distinct dialect.Since the movie is very dialogue based, the dialects can be quite difficult to follow for a non-hindi speaking person. But worry not. The film has english subtitles. If you do not manage to catch it at a theatre near you, wait for the original DVD. It should hit the markets soon.

The Blue Umbrella : Colourful, pleasing.

Ps : Which was the last Indian children's film you saw [Any Indian language or English]?Did you enjoy it? Let me know.. over to the response section.

Series.

மயக்க நிலையிலையும் அவரோட மனசாட்சி a.k.a ஆவி a.k.a call-it-whateverக்கு இனிப்பு சாப்பிடற தவிப்பு குறையாததனால ஒரு அழகான பொண்ணோட உடம்புல புகுந்துக்குவாரு.

அந்த பொண்ணு acting wise, less said the better. பBut the one that takes the cake, அந்த sad ending.

Congratulations Amitabh Bacchan-ji Sir, on your National Award for the Best Actor [53rd National Awards]

Celebrating 60 years :Be a Soldier

In 1999 July, I had travelled to Ladakh, on a project. That was the Kargil war period. On our way back to Delhi, almost all flights were cancelled due to bad weather. We, around 40 of us, sat at the Ladakh airport for almost 5 hours doing nothing - sleeping, yawning, cribbing and ofcourse asking this silly question "Any info on the flight?" every ten minutes. Apart from us there were atleast 500 people at that small airport waiting for the weather to clear and the flight to depart.

We had musicians travelling with us and so a quick music n dance n dappanguthu session happened which sorta lightened the mood for the crew which was tired after a 5 hour wait. The others who waited at the airport joined us in the fun.

But suddenly the situation turned grim and there was complete silence. Before we wondered what had happened, we saw a coffin covered with the National flag that was being sent through the X-ray.. That triggered too many thoughts.. Someone at the border, had sacrificed his life fighting for the country, fighting so that people like us could lead a peaceful life...singing, dancing, having fun at the airport. We felt awful.. don't ask us why. It was the sight of a coffin with the Indian flag on, people shouting "Bharat mata ki Jai" as the coffin went through the X-ray, the thought of a jawan/officer losing his life fighting for the country...

Hours later, as we finally boarded the aircraft, the coffin too travelled with us to Delhi and throughout the journey wherever we turned we could see only moistened eyes all around.

Everytime I see this video, it reminds me of my Ladakh trip and the life of an Indian Army official at the border.. braving the severe weather conditions, serving the country... surviving the most difficult battle in the world!

Guest blogger's post: My Favourite Brand - Myself

My observation of the typical advertising 'babe'.. Scroll down for Guest blogger's post

Gopal is someone I got to know through the blogosphere. We later realized that we kinda worked for the same organization.. he as a full-time copywriter and me, a half-time vetti aabeesar there. Most of , rather all of our conversations have revolved around these French bearded advertising creatives who float around in pre-production meetings discussing their umpteenth Goa trip, Amitabh Bacchan's greatness as a brand ambassador, Cheeni Kum's 'tongue-in-cheek' (an ad guy's favourite expression) dialogues, Piyush Pandey's brilliant talent as a voice-over etc. When we met up recently, I suggested that he write something for my blog, on what else but Advertising stereotypes. So here it is..Mr.Slogan Murugan doing his first and my first on blog - Guest blogger's post. Oh ya, did I tell you that Gopal loves Goa, discusses only Majidi Majidi's latest film, reads the same page of a fat book on all three days of an ad film shoot and does everything else that makes him yet another Advertising stereotype?

Mr.Copywriter who recently shifted to Bengalooru, is also a 'slice of life' photographer. His blogs are filled with lovely pictures that he clicks on his way to work, every morning. Take a look - here and here

Thank you, G!

Guest post by M S Gopal

Once upon a time it was one of the hottest professions around. Today it is just one of the old economy professions, like cobblers, painters, etc.

Advertising. It still exists.

However, many still join it for the money and the fun that's associated with the profession. That's the reason most of them leave. After a short while. The ones who survive, probably do it because they are good at nothing else. Or hoping to be a bollywood film director some day.

For the few who are married to advertising, their lives are consumed by it. No, it's not the passion for work, which surfaces from time to time but the advertising professionals love for oneself. An advertising professionals favourite brand is not the ones he or she works on, but himself or herself. And the smart accountant who owns an advertising agency uses the love of an advertising professional for himself to maximise his or her profits.

Each agency usually has a big star or a couple of them. One campaign and the accountant who runs the show gets the PR machine running. It's like a cycle pump that blows air into an advertising creative's ego. And within no time, a star is created. The accountant meanwhile carries the star around and uses him or her to get more business. While the star hopes to use the same to make it into bollywood.

Meantime, the rest of the world should survive the creatives take on film making, music, cinematography, communication, screenplay, casting couch fantasies and more. Stuff your ears with cotton.
