Vinnaithandi Varuvaya

One number love story was my debut followed by films on policekaarans with lauvv and action. I did yet another cop film. Then I tried to Ctrl+V Derailed followed by a film on Daddy Daddy, Son Son. I sat at home for a year wondering what to do next. "Time for a love story", I told myself and started working on the same. I finalized my artistes, technicians, locales and started shooting ....without a story. I booked Oscar-Grammy award winner A R Rahman as the music director for my Love Story...without a story. The shooting continued.... without a story. The film was ready and a big Giant bought my film. I was all excited . I went around the globe promoting the film. The film released two days ago. I am still looking for the story. If you managed to find it contact me on gautam.englishwonlymenon [at] vtv [dot] com. Thank you very much.

Vaat The Vetti

Travelling, meeting, presenting, sales figures counting, coughing, more and more coughing for two weeks and at the end of all this you still wanted to go and watch only because of Gautam Menon-ARR combo? "Vetti Vetti para vetti!Unakku venum" - ennaye naa sollinden.

Vaat The Valentine

Its love at first sight for yet another Karthik (Young superstar Simbhu) from the tamizh film world the moment he sees Jessie (Trisha), his neighbour. This budding assistant director in films jumps up in the air, does an SRKai movement, chases her on his bike, hits his chest, speaks Englipees dialogues which wonly Good-she, Church Park, WCC peoples understand. Jessie doesn't really like him... or so she says. She is very clear that her dad will never approve of a Hindu boy and hence refuses to entertain Karthik . But he is determined. He chases her all the way till Kerala and she kinda falls for him but is vehement. They travel back to Chennai and after ore da lauv in the train, she still says No. Then yes. Then No.. Then she leaves him and off she goes to UK (or US or some phoren country) only to say "Let's get married" in the end. He makes his first film predictably titled 'Jessie' and yeverybody loves the film. Jessie applauds his effort and a suspense awaits the viewer. Is she is love with him or not? Why did he make that film? Why did she say No,Yes, No and again Yes time and again? The director is as clueless as you and I are.

Velli Thiraiyil Vanduttanga

That's the literal translation of "They have arrived!" he he he. Agreed. Simbhu looks cool and has done a decent job, much better than his earlier films that I have seen on Sun and KTV. But somewhere, the I-chew-all-my-dialogues-and-spit-them-out is still intact. And that's probably why I couldn't see him in the same league as former chocolate boys of Kollywood-Bollywood- Madhavan (Alaipayuthey wonly), Aamir Khan (QSQT), Surya (several films :-p). Trisha's work is very good. Very understated and looks lovely except for a few closeups where the pancake makeup doesn't quite help camouflage her puffy eyes.

Vadakan The Veerakadha

Too much mallu-ing puts me off. The heroine is from the Mallu land, speaks Mallu on and off, there are scenes involving the entire family where the dialogues are fully "ende, unde , aaaaraaanu, oonu kazhinggghoo". Thank God I saw the English-subtitled version. Do the TN released prints have tamizh subtitled for mallu dialogues?

Vaat The Vorking

Two people in love, daddy and brother oppose. He yearns for her. She feels for him. They sing together... dance together. They separate. They are back. We have seen all of this before. Its a simple plot yet narrated with no melodrama, aruvaal, Tata Sumo, "daaaai" etc. The burden is entirely on the lead and they have managed to pull it off quite well... at least till the first half.

The intimate scenes between Trisha and Simbhu are very well conceived, picturized. You can totally relate to them.

Very Terrific Viewfinder

Super impressed with cinematographer Manoj Paramahamsa (Eeram, Unnaipol Oruvan). He has managed to retain the very middle class look of the film through and through with no flashy look-I-am-the-cameraman compositions.

Vogue and The Vague

Trisha's sarees are going to become hot stuff post this film thanks to costume designer Nalini Sriram. But she could have done a much better job in the Western outfits. These look vague, put together in a hurry and terrible in the Kannukkul Kann song.

Very True Vaarthaigal

Like all Goutam Menon's films this one too has 'normal' everyday dialogues. There is even a dialogue in the film taking a dig at his own films with English dialogues. The Kaadhal dialogues like "Yaarum un kann vazhiya enna paakaliye!" fit into the film beautifully.Nice.

Chinmayi's dubbing works for Trisha. Ganesh one of the producers who plays Simbhu's friend is witty.

Vinnai Taandiya Vinner...

...A R Rahman! Have been listening to all the songs for over a month now. My morning routine starts with Omana Penne moving on to Hosannah, Kannukkul Kannai, Anbil Avan, Vinnaithandi varuvaya, Mannippaya and ofcourse Aaromale. Two rotations of the songs are a must. The thing about ARR's songs is the simple melody enhanced by the arrangement. If you listen to them carefully, there will be a musical note heard far far away in the background or the extra 'gamakam' humming fading down in the second paragraph or a violin piece for 5 seconds in the middle of the song. In my opinion, these are the stuff that make them have great recall value.

In this film, there is a scene where Simbhu hums the ARR background score from Bombay, when he sees Trisha in the church. It goes "Pa sa ni sa ni sa ri sa ni dha pa ma ga pa ma ga ma ri". It instantly brought back the shot where Arvind Swamy looks at Manisha Koirali from the top and the camera going round from his point of view. Super!

Vaat The Vorking-not

I mentioned in one of the earlier paragraphs about the burden on the lead cast. In the second half it becomes extremely difficult for us to sit through 'coz of the same reason. Simbhu and Trisha are there in all the scenes through and through uttering the same thing again and again. Becomes repetitive after a point.

Songs are super but Gautam Menon disappoints with his picturization. Suddenly some Lou Bega types emerge from somewhere and point their fingers at us doing the rap-rap stuff. Disappointing.

Repetition - The director probably thinks that people who watch the film are dumb idiots who need to be told the same things several times over. The fact that Trisha's dad doesn't approve of inter-faith marriage and that Simbhu is totally in love with Trisha is repeated over and over again. And every dialogue between them has their name 'attached' at the end of it. "Unakku purilaya Karthik? Enga appa-kku idu pidikkadu Karthik. Karthik, enakku unna pidikkum Karthik!"... Ayyo! we know the names of the lead characters and we understand the problem between them. Why is this repeated like ten times in a scene?

Vaat The Vague

Trisha and Simbhu meet at UK and suddenly the song shifts to US. Simbhu's debut film's credits have Manoj Paramahamsa as the cameraman. I thought Ganesh, his friend (whose screen name i forget) was the director of photography.

Vettu-dabba of The Vellithirai

Samantha and Naga Chaitanya , son of Nagarjuna play Simbhu's on-screen hero, heroine. This guy can't act for nuts. And I am told he plays Simbhu's role in Telugu version. All the best Andhra-ites!

Varthaila vanTha V *!&^@

I am not for using foul language in films even if they are beeped out. The f word pops up pretty frequently. It is very evident that the second half had put the Censor board to sleep. Simbhu's tamizh M word goes unedited, un-beeped.

Vendaam This Vinai

In the last scene, Trisha asks Simbhu how he managed to get her number and he says "adutha padathula sollaren". "Ayyo, vendam Gautam Menaa - nee padamum edukkavendam , engalukku sollavum vendam"

Voltage &The Vegam...

are missing in the film. The film is not pacy. It should not be, infact. You really don't mind the slow narrative in the first half because of Simbhu and Trisha. But its completely the opposite in the second half. You get put off with the repetitions (oops! Aint I repeating the same thing again and again? VTV influence I guess!) and the yawwwn climax. There is no high point in the film... everything is in a mega serial pace.

Vinnaithandi Varuvaya - A lovely first half is spoilt by the maha boring second half.

Vaasalaye Thaandala - 2.5 out of 5

i think the second half was an obvious drama ... if you think of a real relationship the instances of the second half is always the drag of your life. But that said the point is that it needs the time to convince you , on the other hand if it was done too quick i'd say it would have been nasty.

May be they could have had different dialogues but the robs the movie innocence. Though i enjoyed the second half less, i felt it was justified. we just got excited with first half to hate the second.

To me the whole movie was grounded and sensible - and i could even easily relate to the F word usage too.

Some mentioned to me that they hate to see Simbu and trisha always - and i was like WTF? Its a love story - of whom - a Couple .. and you have to watch them.

The point was they candidly shot their reactions - which i think was the greatest relief.

I watched it twice already and may watch it again !i loved the simplicity and honesty which lacked in most of the films !

If not for Simbhu I would have already watched this movie. Now, after reading the review I think I will watch the movie if I have absolutely nothing else to do. Even if I do watch it, it will be for ARR. You didn't mention anything about the BGM in your review. I hope its good. Like you said the biggest plus about Rahman's music is the arrangement. I guess he is one of the very few music directors who do the arrangement themselves. He is so good at it because he has been doing arrangements for other music directors even before he scored music for ads/movies.

I had the pasanisa humming as my ringtone for a long time. :)

I agree with sreekrishnan and this movie brings out the true feelings of two people. Especially Trisha. I can say that coz being a girl I can tell that her confused feelings are very probable and I appreciate the crew for bringing that out quite well. I am not sure about a 'guy's reaction but simbu has done a stupendous job. I was always irritated by his movie, dialogues n whatever ... but this movie sure did prove him as an wonderful actor. Very well taken and it does need a different taste n certain class of maturity to appreciate this. I don t say that people who don t appreciate this or enjoy this or dumb or not sauve or something. It s just that they haven t been through certain feelings or rather certain pain in life. It is a nice story for the 22 to 26 year olds i would say ... but again it depends upon the individual. As for as i am concerned ... i would love to see it couple of more times in theater :) Kudos to the entire VTV team.

Blogeswari: I saw the movie after see a couple of reviews in the papers. Yes the movie was worth some of the hype in the papers and most definitely for the songs/ picturization. You are spot on with your review. Something did not gel in the second half and I did wonder about all the bleeping. Anywho....it was a well spent 2:35mins (I timed it) and a $12, considering the fact that I was watching 'a movie' after 2.5 years

Good review. I agree w/ repetitions in this movie.. same dialogues and same slow mo of Trisha walking away.. Audience got bored and started making Nayanthara jokes. There was no need to go to US.. that didn't make sense..GM needs to work on his story/screenplay a bit more. The movie looked fresh.. but I don't think I can go back and watch it for the 2nd time..like I did w/ Minnale.

Decent review. But with flaws.

"Trisha and Simbhu meet at UK and suddenly the song shifts to US."
- No way did they show UK at all. The shot was at Newyork and then NJ.

Regarding the mallu language being used i felt its needed, it wasn't over used. If it was the other way round (boy belongs to kerala and Girl is in tamilnadu) then what do you expect? you expect girl's relative to speak mallu?

Sreekrishnan said...

@vijay: His sister says UK, but he goes to US and they even refer to Central Park. UK by her father was probably a diversion of truth or just they came to US later ! He meets her only in the US.

I think you are being very liberal with this movie... apart from the "chemistry" between the lead pair, nothing excited me in this movie..it was pretty darn slow with repetitive dialogues. Trisha saying "Karthick" in every frame... sheesh! they could have hired a parrot.
And you are right about Simbhu.. he can never become a "chocolate boy of ANYwood" with his stupid dialogue delivery... enna kodumai sami!

I too hated that "Lou bega" kinda people bouncing on the viewer for EVERY song!!

I think the repeated usage of "Karthik Karthik" was intentional...intending to convey Jessie's affection for him (ext-warped interpretation means sorry :D). Though I'd have been happier with Trisha's own voice, the "Karthik Karthik" from Trisha's mouth was kind of cute.
Or I may just be saying it because Karthik rhymes with Kaushik. :D

Hi:

Bold review. Rather than blindly praising(like all others) because its from GM-ARR combo, you have provided a honest opinion. But still this one looks like too liberal :) .

My take on this movie: This one is a utter slow movie with no worthy story in it. I remember reading a interview from Goutham saying he wants to do a "quicky" before his next major project and hence this VTV movie. He has been too quick and given a half cooked movie.

For first 1 hour, there is no story, no pace in the movie. They just keep showing Simbu and Trisha in close up shots. Repetitive dialogues.

50% of the movie is shot in a small 50-metre long street on ECR.Even a restaurant they show 3-4 times is on a ECR house with few tables and there too you see Trisha and Simbu alone. How long can we see just 2 people on a 50-mtr long street.

3 of the songs looks like "adiye kolluthe" from Varanam Ayiram. Same kind of dance, visuals etc,.

The last songs looks like a spoof of "Manjalveil malai edu" song from Vettaiyadu velaiyadu.

Background score is very average.

Below average movie.

I'm not a big time tamil / hindi movie fan. Usually accompany spouse for her kind of SK, Kamal Hassan, Madhavan, Suriya.....at the theatres. Other movies mainly watched at home.
The opening credits for VTV, waves scene from back of boat towards the church, immediately gave me the impression that this is going to be quite an exceptional movie. True enough it did.

I loved the movie throughout. Lovely Music from ARR and the music videos choreographed beautifully.
The only other movie that I actually went to theatre to watch twice because i wanted to was Batman & Cyrano de Begerac, both donkey years ago. Sometime or another we may need to go to theatres to watch movies twice for other reasons.

I can relate to VTV and to me it's realistic to some extent. Ganesh played his role hilariously well in a supporting role. Trisha & Simbhu had realike chemistry between them. Rest of the actors carried their roles well. Gautham & crew did a splendid job, cinematography as well.
It may seem a mediocre movie to some but for me, it’ll be in my head for sometime. Cheers.

If you haven’t watched the movie yet – STOP HERE.
It wouldn’t be nice to reveal what’s going to happen in the movie.
The only part that got me thinking why Trisha didn't marry the guy of her father's choice (as how she keeps on saying in the movie) - Thiyagu answered that - yes it makes sense, it could've killed the suspense.

vinnaithandi varuvaya is the most pathetic movie I have ever seen.
Firstly, there is absolutely no story..only the 2 lovers talking all the time, imagining things and fighting ..the movie keeps on revolving around the same issues mentioned again and again. the interval is a good relief
to have some tea and recover from headache to prepare for u for the
rest of the tragedy to get over.
If you have nothing else to do in life , go and sit through the pain,
else do good by donating the ticket cost to charity!!

Nalla thokkam varumbodhu, they created utter chaos by bringing the jessi movie scenes with simbu/trisha juxtaposed as characters..

I hope GVM is not into drugs.

First time visitor here!

Did you just notice self-referential one-liners replacing substance in Tamil movies or what? This has now become the rage, leaving one to wonder what they would do to be creative in the parody genre. The references are, all of them demented. They range from toadying and anxious salutes to yester-year superstars (as if these names are incantations that would/could ensure success for a movie) to mentions of producers and names that an average person does not even notice in the credits. Here are two of my picks for the ultimate demented self-mentions: Rajnikanth balloon sky-writing "Superstar” in Chandramuki, his return-from-retirement vehicle; Jeeva's referencing his producer father (in more than one scene) in Katcheri Aarambham. If the former is self-laudatory run amok the latter has got to be desperate hopefulness. I did not expect that Gautam Menon would stoop to this, when he is still acitve! It is heartily sickening, all these self-congratulations and does not show serious creative intent.

And about Nalini Sriram's costume designs: I agree Trisha in her sari is so chic looking, it might breathe life into this dying mode of clothing. Nalini's choice of western clothing may be vague but I was glad not to see the wet-diaper look salwar.:) (Am I alone in seeing this as the most unflattering outfit ever?!)

Sorry for the longish comment.

Cheers

I watched the movie and it was good, but the climax was twisted for the sake of twisting. The Central park scene was better than the climax scene in the end (Trisha and Simbhu) walking near the theatre.

Dialogues were penned beautifully...more than anything. Acting was good, but there were other factors in the movie (cinematography, dialogues, music) that really made it great.

Is it a cult movie like Alaipayuthe? Not really...may be time will tell.

My story too ended the same way, except that, my ex-bf is no film-maker to make a film with my name and that am yet single, but seriously picky when I have to mingle :)

No story yeah.......what would u say if one tells that 93.7% of the film had happened in my life....exactly exactly....live & live....then thats what is protrayed here.....it has happened for many....
if u always look for bookish stories then sit, find & watch vetrimaaran's movies.....sometimes true directors like gautham tries to protray some real life stories & charecters......
so sad that i read this rubbish review after 1.5 years.....
one must understand concepts of a film apart from story.....not always talking damn about films....
also,by your reviews you just want to say that u've a lot of talent to change all these.....then come out & make a movie devoid of all mistakes......then comment in others like this!!!!
hey.i've a doubt that,
are u actually a tamilian or a north lad trying to spoil name of tamilians.....???
