Film-making:The Madness -DUBBING

Ah, my favourite topic: Dubbing aka Dupping in Kollywood baashai. I am not talking about films like Aparachitudu, Shivaputrudu, Idhu dhaanda Police which are dubbed from the master language into another. This post will talk about dubbing artistes who dub for actors and actresses in films.

You can't give full credit to an actor whose voice dubbed by another for his/her performance. Their job is probably just 60%. 40% of the effort is put in by the dubbing artiste who scream, shout, cry, laugh, smile, talk infront of the mike.

In a hero dominated industry like ours, no one really cares whether the heroine knows tamizh or not." Ellam dubbing la pathukallam pa" is one term you will hear most often on the sets of a tamizh film when there is a dialogue oriented scene filmed. It means that during a dialogue shot, the usual imports from Mumbai like Payal Agarwals, Pooja Khandelwals and the Neha Mehtas will say 1-2-3 or a-b-c-d if they are convent educated, their voices are later dubbed usually by Savitha Reddy, Priya or Renuka Kadhir. No wonder Simran and Jyothika sounded the same. Real life sisters Radha and Ambika had the same voice too - Durga R. Sundarrajan zindabad! Blame Meena or Kanaka's irritatingly cute cute "poangaa mamaaa" on Uma Bharani. The brief for these dubbing artistes is plain and simple. "Oru love-oda tamizh ponnu madiri pesunggammaaa!" Seriously, listen to Meena in Muthu - yikes! Radha in Mella tirandadu Kadavu - One slap on her face when she kozhanjufyes with Mohan with that over-cute voice. The most irritating of all - Jeya Geetha for Kolangal Devayani saying "Precchaaanai" and "Tollssss". The most popular is Anuradha who is Khushboo's aasthana dubbeee. Khushboo was one of the few actresses who came out in public and gave credit to Anuradha. No dubbing in Kollywood is complete without two mentions. 1. The first family of Kollywood dubbers - Hemamalini who was a queen bee dubber dubbing for most actresses in 80s, her brother M S Bhaskar, their children, grandchildren etc. 2. Average playback singer S N Surendhar's claim to fame was that he dubbed for Mike Mogan. No concert of Ganghei Amaren in the 90s was complete without SNS saying "poranda kuzhanda en teriyuma azhardu..." dialogue from Mouna Ragam. But when Mike Mogan started dubbing himself without SNS, down went his market along with the mike.

Most of the villians like Andhra imported like Kotta Srinivasa Rao or Mumbai irakkumadi Aashish vidyarthi probably say sa-ri-ga-ma-pa-da-ni if they have to say "yeeei.. unnaa summma vida maatendaaaa..." and Rajendhar, Sai kumar, Sai ravi etc do the honours for them. Watch the blockbuster film Dhill and see Ashish Vidyarthi's lips saying "ya ya ya ma ma ma ya ya ya" for everything.

Having said that, I must give credit for some film-makers who make an effort to get new voices to dub for the cast. Actress Kaniha dubbed for Sadaa in Anniyan and for Shriya Saran in Sivaji. The sync - less said the better. But I quite liked the voice that matched the face. A whole bunch of people were auditioned to dub for Suman in Sivaji. Finally, Subbu Arunachalam whose voice, in a way sounds similar to Suman's real voice with a nasal tone was used. Deepa Venkat was fantastic for Simran in Kannathil..Singer Chinmayi had dubbed for Bhumika in Sillunnu oru kaadhal, Tanisha in Unnale Unnale and now Padmapriya in Sattham Podathey. I will not bore you guys again talking about the sync in the above films because it was indeed terrible but again a different voice. Yet to watch Sattham... so can't comment on that.

A lot of popular actors and actresses have dubbed for other actresses. Saritha for Naghma in Kaadhalan and other films, Revathi for Kajol in Minsara Kanavu and Tabu in Kandukondein, Banupriya for Urmila Matondkar in Indian and Sripriya for Jayasudha in Alaipayuthey. Rare actors like Jayashree [of thendrale ennai todu fame] dubbed for Geetha in Azhagan, Jyothika in Pachaikili. But when popular character actors dub for other actors, you can't but visualize the dubbing actor's face instead of the one on screen. When I watched Mallu actor Murali, I could only see actor Rajesh who dubbed for him because of his distinct voice... Nasser for Nedumudi Venu in some film - Again it was nasser's nasal voice + nose was what I was thinking of, not Nedumudi+nose. Delhi Ganesh is one lucky fellow. He has dubbed for two big superstars in tamizh films -Kannada actor Vishnuvardhan in Mazhalai pattalangal and Chiranjeevi in 47 naatkal. I always think that Suhasini as Thalapathi's heroine, not Shobhana.. may be it is because I visualize Suhasini automatically whenever I watch Shobhana's scenes in the film. But I was happy to see the hindi film Guru in tamizh visualizing Surya instead of the boring Abhishek Bachchan...he he he. Actress Rohini's voice matched Jyothika in Vettaiyadu better than the usual Savitha Reddy voice. Rohini is one person who has a nice, natural, un-dubbey tone to her voice. Vikram has this distinct credit of dubbing for both Abbas and Prabhudeva in V.I.P.Vikram dubbed for Abbas in Kandukondein as well.

Ah! Gautam Menon and his hitchcock-tanam. Not only does our man show his face in all his films but has also started dubbing for his villians- Jeevan in Kaakha Kaakha and Milind Soman in Pachaikili. Gautam, you are a decent director not dubber. Ditto Bharathiraja. Do you remember Nizhalgal Ravi's face in Vedampudidu or Bharathiraja 's voice? Bharathiraja for Manivannan in Kodi parakkudu was bad.

Kudos to Ameer for letting tamizh-terinja actress Priya mani to dub for herself in Parutthi veeran. I believe they took 22 days to dub but it was worth the effort. It sounded very natural and rustic. I like Asin better than Trisha for the simple reason that Asin dubs herself. Our convent-educated "naa church park la padichen-enakku tameeel teriyadu" Tamizh girl Trisha - Shame on you! I also wonder why Padmapriya did not dub herself in Sattham... Vasanth had to dub lead actor Prithviraj twice for the film (he mentioned this on a Podhigai show) to cut the mallu accent. In that case, why not half the effort for your lead actress as well, Sir?

Guys, isn't it irritating to listen to the same dubbing artistes' voice and most of the times badly dubbed? Why can't film-makers put some effort to sync the dialogues better during dubbing especially for actresses? Why can't they get their heroines to learn their lines by-heart prior to the shoot so that it does not look bad on screen when dubbed later? The heroines' dubbing looks awful on screen with lips saying a-b-c-d and voice saying "enna mannichuddungaaa....",doesn't it? Vasanth, Shankar, Selvaraghavan - are you all listening?

Bollywood is way ahead when it comes to dubbing. Watch Jism and you will never be able to make out the fact that both Bipasha and John Abraham's voices were dubbed by professional voice-over artistes Mona Ghosh and Viraj respectively. I am waiting to watch Om Shanti Om to see how Deepika Padukone's voice has been dubbed by RJ Prachi.

Ps: The funniest of all dubbings - Anita Raj in Thaai veedu. She says all her dialogues in Hindi. yes.. a tamizh film with the lead actress mouthing her dialogues in Hindi with a completely different voice dubbing for her in tamizh. It is hilarious! This DVD is one collector's item. Buy it, watch it .. now!

Hi Blogeswari .Came to your blog thru Ammani's .Cool writing.!
The most farcical voice of recent times was Jayageetha's voice for Aishwarya Rai in Kandukonden. That was the first instance the voice over sounded just as constipated as the face that mouthed it. I thought Hemamalini and Durga (remember Nadiya , Sasikala and the likes with these voices? aiyo!!!)were the most unfeelingest when it came to dubbing but this Jayageetha really had them for breakfast.Ennavo ponga, ippollam dubbing thevaiYE illai..Heroines dont say anything profound or with emotion. Its all pretty plastic. So they can as well say 1,2,3 abc whatever..Shriya Saran maari. :)
Sorry for the longish comment.

I enjoyed the post on the Vande Mataram video very much ! Thanks.

You should be doing your Phd on dubbing in Kollywood movies. Very comprehensive and interesting. Ages ago I have seen the dubbing recording where Uma Bharani screams for the about-to-be-abused heroine. Thought it was quite challenging to fake a scream.

Great post on dubbing and dubbing artist full of information. One of the most irritating dubbing i heard was in 'Anbe Sivam', the versatile singer 'Anuradha Sriram' gave her voice for heroine...

I don't know why Vasanth didn't use Padmapriya's voice in Satham Podathey, becoz for 'Thavamai Thavamirundhu', she herself dubbed and it was good... Though Chinmayi's voice is different... we are so familiar with Chinmayi's voice and face through various TV shows and hence i get an odd feeling while watching the scenes in Satham podathey....

infact after 'Autograph', Gopika didn't dub for any other films and worst thing is that she said she is not allowed to dub for herself even in malayalam films....

Good post...

Adding to ur post..Vikram also dubbed the main terrorist character in kuruthi punal...and SPB also rendered his voice to our ulaga nayagan for his telugu to Tamil dubbing films.....

Please change the template of your blog..or give some space between the lines of the paragraph...Really difficult to read....

Nice topic and nice reearch.
IMO, Saveetha is a good Dubbing Artiste who differentiates for Simran, Jyotika and Laila. I read the review of Vaali in Kumudham that 50% of Simran's credit should go to Savitha.

Deepa Venkat's name has to be mentioned here. She has wonderful voice with good modulation. She dubbed for Simran in Kannathil Muthamittal and for Jo in 123.

Actress Anuradha (Item Number fame)dubbed for Nagma in Citizen movie.

In Boys, Actress Rathi dubbed for Harini aka Genelia. Strangely, Rathi didnt dub in her own voice in movies like Solla Marandha kadhai, etc. But her voice is a very sweet one.

dubbing is certainly an art which is mastered by few & practiced by many.

it won't be correct to term that Mumbai's industry is far ahead in terms of dubbing.....same perspective may be shared by someone in mumbai by terming that hollywood dubbing is way ahead of us.

The needs/wants of any specific industry are defined over the years & re-evaluated at regular intervals.

If those south dubbing artists had been groomed in mumbai they may do equal or better for any film like Jism....that wouldnt mean that people dont like their work....they deliver a certain quality which is appreciated by local viewers who are the majority.

Dubbing has become easier now due to technical developement. But live dubbing in 80's was very difficult. They are really talented
but they are over doing their job.

great blog......kudos to Blogeswari and others who ve presented a rich set of information.....its a good sign that actresses like Rathi and Kanika dubbing for others....and even playback singers like Anuradha Sriram and Chinmayee doin a different job with a mic is cool....

But its all in director's hand to brighten it up or bull shit stuff....director Shankar's choice of Kanika for Shreya and Sadhaa in his movies was brilliant and it worked out really well...even K.V Anand has made a noble attempt in his recent movie "Ayan" where he has used Ajay kapoor(tamil serial kolangal fame) to dub for the villain....

A Good dubbing voice must be unique, not easily recognizable and best suitable for the face on screen....very few film makers strike the right note...all others ridicules themselves !!!

Anonymous said...

Agree with Savitha Reddy. But mostly, because she is so ubiquitous for the last few years. And also, the high pitched tone she is asked to use by producers. She herself mentioned, they want her to squeak.

Many actresses have mentioned that they would love to dub(mallu, telugu), but are forced not to b/c of not having super-sweet voices. Too bad, really. I am speaking for the tamil/telugu/mallu knowing actresses.

I also feel Rohini has a superb voice.

kajan

Harish said...

yeah kajan.....rohini has a tender voice...but her voice doesn't suit that wel for young actresses.....quite obvious na??....a middle aged women dubbing for young girls....rohini's voice for Aaradhana(Jothika) in vettaiyadu vilayadu sounded good....but she again dubbed jothika in the movie pachakili muthucharam, which did not work out tat well....she really is amateur in the dubbing industry.....she has to gain some exp before voicing to characters with negative shades. because it requires special skills....:)

actress rohini dubbed for Girija

Suchitra(RJ and singer) dubbed for shreya in the movie kanthaswamy !!!

Hey, great post. who dubbed for ajith in aasai?Sounds familiar but i can't place it.

Anonymous said...

Suchitra's voice sounds like torn metal tin, it was horrible for shreya... Savitha would have done a better job. Savitha has a nack of moulding her voice to the body language of the person

Harish said...

well !!!....a guy named vijay has dubbed for ajith in the movie Aasai...but i ve no clue who that vijay is....i guess Aasai is the only movie in which ajith hasn't dubbed for himself...isn't it ???

Hey thanks. where did u get that info from? Actually after listening to his voice a lot, ajith's voice in aasai sounds a lot like the actor suresh. Yes i think it is him.

Harish said...

oh yeah....suresh has dubbed for quite a few actors in the past including nagarjuna in ratchagan...comparing the voices in aasai and ratchagan u can find slight difference btwn them...but suresh cant be ruled out in this case...may be ure rite....

Any idea who is doing dubbing for Tamanna ? It was kind of over the board in Ayan !!

Harish said...

chinmayi dubbed for tamannah in Ayan and kanden kadhalai....chinmayi is the most happening voice artist in recent years ever since she started dubbing for female leads like bhumika in sillunu oru kadhal, sameera reddy in vaaranam ayiram, tanisha in unnale unnale....but my personal fav is lekha in jeyam kondan.....she deserves top honour for tat effort....

singaporean said...

who will be dubbing for aishwarya rai in endhiran and raavana? And in Dasavathaaram, who dubbed for mallika sherawat and jayapradha? And for nayanthara? Trisha is the most embarassingest of all. She is pure tamil but has not speak a single word of tamil. But now for her hindi movie, khatta metta, she is learning hindi from akshay kumar to use it for that movie. So damn avamaanam man. But she can act better than nayanthara or shreya. Asin i love her so much. I dont mind having that malayalam accent in her talking. At least she speaks in tamil being a malayali.

Finally a blog on this Kollywood DUBBING madness.

Will all the kollywood fans unite and protest against Chinmayi's horrible dubbing voice. Shez a good singer but a PATHETIC dubbing artist. IMHO she should just stick to her singing.

I hate her voice (with that horrible tamil accent) so much that I either mute the volume or watch with subtitles if possible. Have mercy I were to watch it at the movies.

Great blog BTW.

aishwarya rajinikanth voice in aayirathil oruvan for reema sen was nice. Savitha again dubbed for poorna in kandha kottai. Her voice is used everytime for most movies. I think chinmayi voice is very sexy and stylish. Dubbed for sameera reddy in aasal n vaaranam aayiram. Divya spandana, a kannada, dubbed her ownself in vaaranam aayiram. i dun understand why trisha akka cnnt dub her ownself when shes a pacchai tamillian.

Harish said...

Chinmayee has dubbed for trisha in "Vinnaithandi Varuvaaya"....the best part of it is, her name was specially mentioned and thanked in the beginning of the movie(a very good sign of gratitude by gautham)....i would love to see more directors credit their dubbing artists like this...they deserve more appreciation than what they get now....

Harish said...

There had been many complaints bout trisha not voicing for herself in the past...it still continues indeed...Will she take an extra bit of effort to dub in her future projects atleast ???...tats the question which will be left unanswered for now.... After all she has got a pretty decent voice and tamil diction unlike Jyothika. i wish she hadn't dubbed for "Maayavi"(her voice was truly terrible)....but atleast she gave it a try...If Jyotika can do it, why couldn't trisha ???....

love this forum...i think chinmayi is a good dubbing artiste. her voice is very sexy and nice. she has dubbed for bhumika in sillunu oru kaadhal(remember she kept saying 'gautam gautam' the whole movie), tanisha in unnale unnale(tanisha is kajol sister), padmapriya in satham podathey(padmapriya is a tamillachi), lekha washington in jayamkondaan(lekha is born and brought up in chennai), kangana ranaut in dhaam dhoom(the voice sounded fresh in the movie), vedhika in sakkarakatti(quite ok), meenakshi in TN-07 AL 4777(elantha pazham girl in rajathi raja), neetu chandra in yavarum nalam & theeradha vilaiyattu pillai(remember the kamasutra book in YN), kajal aggarwal in modhi vilayadu(nice though), tamannaah in kandein kadhalai(gud), sameera reddy in vaaranam aayiram & aasal(sounds perfect) last but not least for thamizh therinja trisha KRISHAN in vinnaithaandi varuvaaya. in my own opinion chinmayi does a good job everytime. she is fluent in 6 languages.(Tamil,Telugu,Hindi,English,French,German) i cant stand hearing those normal like savitha reddy(nayan in aadhavan),renuka(nayan in billa),priya(mallika sherawat in dasavathaaram, for pooja except naan kadavul, sonia agarwal).deepa venkat for simran in vaaranam aayiram n kannathil muthamittal, sneha too. i hope actresses can start to talk in their own voice. dubbing artistes give 60 per cent of life to characters.

@Blogeswari, "Banupriya for... Jayasudha in Alaipayuthey" - I'm quite sure it was Sripriya and not Banupriya. Banupriya's voice is shriller :-)

Saritha also dubbed for Meenakshi Seshadri in Duet.

Thalaivasal Vijay for Chakravarthi and Sukanya (of Walter Vetrivel fame) for Nandita Das in Kannathil Muthamittal.

Mani Ratnam let all his heroines dub for themselves in Aayutha Ezhuthu... IMHO, the only one worth her salt was Meera Jasmine!
