சொதப்பல் அட்வர்டைஸ்மென்ட் 4

This product's USP is its salt content and the client wanted to highlight the same in his ads. The first series of ads had pretty woman with lots and lots of makeup barge into cafes`, trains with their camera crew and ask smart looking men who say "awww" (not this awww) - "Kya aapke toothpaste mein namak hai?" [Does your toothpaste have salt?] and when these men give their 'I-am-an-onnan-number-bekku' look, they are given a pack of Colgate active salt and the lady + crew runs out but only after saying "Let's go!"

[Don't miss the bekku's look in the above photograph..he he ]

Watch the television commercial with Shiv Pandit and Koel Purie. And please don't miss the fact that this man carries his toothpaste wherever he goes... even to the Cafe`... ha ha ha!

These ads were released about two years ago. And for this year, the client's brief to the advertising agency would have been to 'go a step ahead'. And the agency, taking their words literally has gone ahead.. from trains to aircrafts. This time we see yet another bekku and model (Sandhya mridul) in an aircraft!

Our smart man a.k.a bekku with eyebrows shaped [metrosexual-aam..dho-da!] is mossukufying something in the aircraft and says "awww" and enter Sandhya Mridul and gang asking the dreaded "Kya aapke toothpaste mein namak hai?" . Bekku says No. Madam gives Colgate active salt and says "Let's go!" and gets out. Oh yes, our man does carry the toothpaste with him wherever he goes. Aren't we supposed to put toothpaste and other creams in our check-in baggage ? How was this man allowed to carry his coveted 'tooth paste' with him?

Look carefully. This time, there is an addition in the end. After the drama in the aircraft and the product shot etc. bekku with his shaped eyebrows comes back. This time we see him infront of the mirror, brushing his teeth. He TASTES the product and says "mmm..taste bhi badhiya hai!" [tastes wonderful]. Aaaandaaavaa!

Such ads make me feel good. I was never into the 'creative' bit of ad films. Was more of a logistics person. And one fine day, I joined this company and found myself doing 'creative' work for the branch and the next year became part of the National creative team. [yabba, evlo naala idha sollanumnnu nenachen? ]

"Adade, Are we really worth being a part of the national creative team of the best media brand in the country? [ellam oru vilambarandeeinnn]Doesn't creativity require talking ore-da jargon and maha moolais?" I ask myself almost everyday.

But when I look at such duds and the brains behind these ads, I tell myself "Adiyeeiii inime National enna, you can be a part of the International creative team also,di!"

Apdi podu!

30 Naal..30 samayal

Tamizh magazines for women- Mangayar Malar, Aval Vigadan, Snegidhi etc have been giving this 30 naal... 30 samayal recipe books as ilavasa inaippus [free supplements] for over 6 years now. 30 naal ... 30 tuvayal , 30 naal... 30 kuruma, 30 naal... 30 gravy are some of the books in this series.

Always enthu to collect such recipe books (but never to use them), I had a huge collection of these 30 naal books at the end of one year. My f-i-l saw my enthu-ness and added his bit of 30 naal books everytime he visited us and so I had this huge library of 30 naal.. books with duplicate copies of several books. Two copies of 30 takkaali [tomato ] recipes, 30 vagai kanji, 30 vagai sooper tippan...and so on

The series had gathered a lot of dust in the kitchen shelf and I decided to give them a break and transferred them to the book-binding shop for two weeks. They came back in 7 neat bound volumes - each with a minimum of twenty '30 naal...' books.

I was very proud of my 'collection' and subtle kostans from m.i.l like "Inda book-ellam nee use pandradillayo?" were ignored. Please note - It was not "padikkaradu illayo?". It was "use pandradillayo?"

The mega enthu '30 naal.. ' books drive got itself converted into a mega export drive when I started 'exporting' such books to friends and family in other countries.

A closer look at these books revealed that they were nothing but clones of one mega book which must have been titled '30 common recipes for the country Indian in you' . Take for instance the '30 naal ... 30 Chutneys' book. The first recipe is your kothamalli chutney. The subsequent pages for Karuveppillai, takkaali, vengayam chutneys had the same recipe with the main ingredient changed. Infact the recipe would read "This is similar to Kothamalli chutney... Substitute takkali for kothamalli". Off we go to the Tuvayal book. The pages are in the same order as the chutney book with one line added. "Fry the entire chutney in a lot of oil and your TUVAYAL will last for a month"

These books remind me of Chef Damodaran's cookery show on Jaya TV. Almost all his recipes would start with "vengayatha podiya narukki podunga, konjam takkali, konjam inji poondu, kothammali" and end with "saapteenganna summa sooper-a irukkum!". I always wait for the last segment where he says this when he serves the dish.

Most of these '30 naal' books were earlier compiled by 'Menu raani' Chellam or 'Samayal thilagam' Revathy Shanmugham (Kannadasan's daughter )- both well known cooks who brought some amount of credibility to the recipe however repetitive they were. But of late, regular readers of these magazines have started compiling their own recipes which get published as an ilavasa inaippu. And what's worse - these katthu kuttis, in the name of innovation, cook up some nonsense. Take for example - 30 naal...30 poosani-parangikkai samayal'. Would you even consider preparing Pooshanikkai rice or a Parangikkai Appalam? Uvveek!

And these are the same 4-5 faces who write in all magazines, particularly those who contribute to the 'tips' section which are the usual - "Don't waste old pieces of bathing soap. Put them together , add water and use them to wash your tiles" or "Use your old toothbrush to clean the corners of your kitchen tiles" and such kind of 'different' stuff.

But yes, there's one thing maha common to these ilavasa inappus apart from the Aishwarya Rai or an Asin on the cover. That's the intro line from these vasagis with the golden words "Kozhandaingal Virumbi saappiduvargal'' [kids would love it]. Kamaan I say, what makes them think that the 'Koyaindanga' would love a sprouts sandwich? "30 naal ... 30 sprouts samayal" with a "Kozhandaingal Virumbi saappiduvargal'' line? Forget Koyandainga, even kazhudais like me wouldn't want to 'virumbi' read such recipes.

But this one '30 naal ... 30 sweets' book's cover (Dated Oct '06) had me in splits.

Jo, in a Pothy's saree on the cover saying "Ennoda mamiyar-a asattha naan ready" (for Deepavali...with these recipes). Ha ha ha! Did she really asathify her mamiyar preparing laddu, jaangiri, Mysore pauk burning herself in the hot kitchen?

Mrs. Sivakumar-ukke velicham!

Ummon's Virudu

Ummon's tag has pending for quite sometime.

I am supposed to pick a blog that really impressed me, but it can't be someone I know. Not even virtually. It has to be a blog you stumbled upon or walked into through links. It can't be a blogger I have built an online relationship with.

And the award goes to Mumbai Magic... the family of three bloggers - Janaki ma'am, her daughter Deepa and grand daughter Aishwarya.

I soo... relate to their blog everytime I read their posts. The food posts appadiye take me to Madras. The Amchi Mumbai posts remind me of the good ol' shooting days of prop hunting, costume shopping and so on...

I have never met this family nor have I interacted with them but I am gonna invite myself over to their place one of these days to have maami's Vadams.

This 3 Generation blog has made it to Nat Geo's Mumbai destination guide. Congratulations !

I am tagging Ammani, Bhaamini, Deepz, Art Navy, Boo , UK , Hastobeme , AJ and the winner of the award to do the same.

PS : UK, Deepz and Hastobeme - WAKE UP!

Aanandam.. Peraanandam

Is this the season of sogams or am I the only one seeing people worrying / sulking all the time?

No boyfriend / girl friend - Sulk.. ok understandable. Have a boyfriend ? Sulk again ..."he was flirting with that girl... bohooo".

Don't have a job ? Sulk.. ok agreed. Have a job? Sulk again 'coz you don't get along with X, Y and Z in office!

Ofcourse all of us have our share of problems but oflate sulking and cribbing have become reasons to seek attention - more importantly the 'boyfriend / girlfriend problem' varieties who beg for your shoulders to cry on.

In such times, why don't they make an attempt to be happy? There are some (well, a lot of) people who follow an exact pattern of conversation . "Hi..how are you? pssst...you know, am down... you know this job... this colleague... my boyfriend.. sulk sulk and sulk!"

I try and put a NO-ENTRY board to such perennial cribbers. It is not possible for anyone to be happy and enthu 24*7 but 'always azhugai' is simply not ok.

The following list goes out to them. Try and find the Aanandam in your lives... You will find a little Peraanandam hiding inside.

Aanandam is... when you are vetti-ing in office

Peraanandam is... when you think of the fact that you get paid for Facebook-ing and twitter-ing!

Aanandam ... an ARR album release

Peraanandam .. when it is in Tamizh

Aanandam .. you move into your new illam

Peraanandam... you realize that the cell phone connectivity is poor there (good excuse to avoid calls from you-know-where)

Aanandam...a call from a friend

Peraanandam... ulagamagaa gossip with her - about Hansika Motwani (who? what??? Google I say!)

Aanandam... a surprise gift from a friend

Peraanandam...when you you make full use of it

Aanandam... a swim in the pool

Peraanandam... you realise you are the Queen swimmer in the pool of katthu-kutti Auntyjis and unclejis

Aanandam... spicy rasam, rice and urulai roast by the purushan on Sundays

Peraanandam... when he cleans the kitchen after cooking

Aanandam ...waiting for the monsoons

Peraanandam ... the thought of onion pakodas and tea during rains

Off I go to eat my pakodas....

Ooh..awwww..ouch

Suddenly we have all become very Englees, French, Italian in our speeches. Junta used to talk about filling 'gas' in one number TVS 50. My first reaction - "Gas in TVS 50 na they fill petrol in Cylinder-a? Technology has imbroved so much eh?" Honestly, I thought 'gas' meant some pudu, special petrol exclusively for two wheelers in Madras. Wonly after sometime (months,days...hehe) I realized the Englipeesness of peoples.

Oflate, I seem to be hearing and reading a lot of 'awwwwwwwwws'. I don't know if its the 'aw' or the 'w's in the entire expression that bugs me. 'awww' is the annoying akka of 'cho chweet'.

Another most annoying expression / word is 'mwah'. "Thxs 4 rding ma blog.. c u ltr... mwah", read officially unofficial blog posts (I don't want to elaborate on this - velai mael aasai). Do you literally go around kissing everyone and anyone when you meet them? "Ma blog?" - I thought it was your blog and not your amma's.

And what's this 'moi' business? Official mails read "This has been adapted by moi" . Initially I thought it had something to do with 'Moi-ppanam'. May be the mail recipient owed some Moi-ppanam to the sender and using a 'moi' was a reminder for the pending amount.

I must've been snoring asusual when this great evolution of the language happened? Can you please to be telling me when and how the Great englipisification, French and Italification happened in our lives? Thanking you.

Updated - 21st May

"Sorry babes!", "Hi Babes!" is something I get to hear atleast a million times. Arrrrrrgh! Babes probably makes girls look / sound hip. Babe to me is a 'BABE'... The Ollipicchan models with LIC building heels, the Malaika Arora types with skirts shorter than jettis are BABES! Enna paatha Babe madiri teriyidha... I refuse to be associated with kutta skirt ollipicchans... Sorry babe!

Annoying Anthems

Everybody seems to be having an 'anthem' these days. They are these "Kuch kar dikhayenge" "Hum honge kaamyaab" "Mutti mein dum hai" kinda JavedAkhtGulazirsh$&t

What's even more annoying is Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composing all of them. Check out the following.

Anthem No.1 - Lead India

Lead India - the most over-rated campaign of all time. What has it done to India in the last one year apart from winning the coveted Cannes whatever award? Some few people came, spoke, got elected/ chosen and then what ? Anyway, Lead India part 2 is on now and to add 'josh' to it (Oh yes, how can I forget this word!) the 'anthem' is doing its second rounds. It has been composed by none other than the great Shankar Ehsaan and Loy and as usual Shankar sings and keduthufies it along with Sukhwinder denied-an-Oscar-ticket Singh adding the Punjab da munda dum to it.

"Tum chalo Hindustan chale..." - Yeah , what next ? "Hum Sab saath chaleinnnnn" in higgh pitch with some aaaahhhh....by Shankar Mahadevan? So predictable. Tirundungappa!

Anthem No. 2 - IPL on Max

Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy yagain. Now it's called 'Ek Desh - Ek Junoon'. I loved the TVC . Max always comes up with super campaigns for their channel. Last year's IPL campaign- Manoranjan Ka baap was kalakkals. I agree, the Bollywood retro-Deewaar-Sholay bit has been done to death but this still remains my favourite for the manda-kaanjing twist . And the trend continues with this year's Ek Desh Ek Junoon TVC. Nice thought, well shot.

But they have murdered their campaign adding this 'anthem' bit. Watch this kandravi song which is the 'anthem' of DLF-IPL on Max.

Oh, please to check out Shankar's speech on the song, at the press conference . " Hosh Udayenge.. Josh Udayange!" - Dai ! Naa unga Pall-a Udappayenge .

Anthem # 3 - Hero Honda dok dok

This one takes the cake. An 'anthem' for Hero Honda's Silver jubilee. Hero Honda's TVCs are verriii boring and yawwwwn quotient is very high. There was this 60 seconder ad last year featuring Hrithik Roshan, some cricketers and other extras. I don't want to bother you tube-ing.

And this year , they have an 'anthem' for 25th year - wow!!

Read this post on this ad.

"Dil ko Josh dedo...Aasmaan -Udaan chunaheee" - I am very sure the composers are the great anthem expert trio S-E-L. I used to be a great fan of Shankar Mahadevan till he started mook-singing these anthems . When these song play on radio, I don't know till the end if its for Lead India ,Max, Hero Honda or some party's election campaign.

Ok, forget the lyrics. All three anthems above, follow a set pattern - an alaapanai, a couple of gamakams and a high pitch that wants you to slap the singers and the composers .

With ICC Champions trophy around the corner, I am already dreading another set of anthems that will play on high rotate . Ok Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, let me help you with the first line of the lyrics for the ICC 'anthem'...

...."Hum dikhayenge... humare mutthi main hai trophy... waapas leke aayenge... bharat humara shaan hai... hum josh udayenge... "

Chorus : Bharat humara shaan hai... Mutthi main dum hai.. (twice)

Shankar continues : Hum dikhayengeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee...
